"It Ain't Finished Until the Buttons are Sewn On"
Speaker: Katie Paseo, Button and Embellishment Aficionado

Katie Paseo was born in Portland, Oregon and lived there until 1980 when her family moved to Seaside.  Growing up, she seemed to have a bent towards being creative with art.  This made up for her struggles in school; later learning that she has dyslexia.  While in Seaside, she attended sewing classes and, under the supervision of her sewing teacher, she made her daughter-in-law’s wedding gown and all of the bridesmaids’ dresses.   It was very hard, since understanding the patterns was very difficult.

Katie eventually started quilting and started creating her own quilt designs.  She doesn’t like to follow instructions and finds it much more fun and creative to sew “outside the lines.”

She inherited her aunts’ antique button collection and started making button quilts as a way to display the beautiful buttons.  Katie believes buttons should be seen or worn, but never shut up in a button box or in a metal can.  In the process of making her button quilts, she has learned a lot more about buttons and has had to purchase many more to complete some of her button projects.   She always says, “My quilts aren’t finished until the buttons are sewn on.”

After the lecture, Katie would love to meet individually with guild members and evaluate their own button collections.  Bring your box, jar, bag or special container and meet with Katie to discover what treasurers you own!

Workshop: CRGQG Comfort Quilt Jelly Roll Race
1-4 pm (After meeting)

Materials Needed:

  • 65 strips, cut 2.5 inches wide –  a wide variety of colors and textures is best (cut strips lengthwise of 42” or larger fabrics)
  • Sewing machine, power strip
  • Thread, sewing tools

A limited number of strip kits will be available if you do not have enough stash to make 65 strips or wish to keep your jelly roll quilt.  All quilts made from kits will be donated either to the Suttle Lake AIDS Camp or the Hood River Women’s Shelter.  You can sign up for a kit when you register for the workshop.

Prizes will be awarded during the race for progress, completion, chaos and noise.  This should be loads of fun and a great way to support our Comfort Quilt Program
